Business Spotlight: Slightly High Maintenance Salon & Boutique
KINGMAN – When you think of visiting a salon, think of Slightly High Maintenance & Boutique. This is the ‘salon with a heart,’ a family owned and operated full-service salon in the heart of Kingman. Owners Stephanie and Kevin Wilkerson started Slightly High Maintenance in May, 2008 and have turned a husband-and-wife business into a full-blown family business.
Two of their three full-time beauty specialists are their daughters Jennifer Patrykus and Jaleigh Wilkerson. Jennifer started with the salon as a receptionist when she was 12. She received her license five years ago. Jaleigh started with the salon at age 14 as a receptionist as well. She then started her apprenticeship in 2019, and just received her license in July. Their third full-time beauty specialist, Teresa Velasquez, is practically family – having been with the salon for the last 12 years.
“My girls got interested in this business just as I did – at an early age!” said Stephanie. “Growing up, I was always doing my dolls’ hair. Then I saw the movie, ‘Grease’ – with all the focus on beauty school, hair and makeup. So I gravitated toward a career in beauty and attended beauty school as soon as I could.”
The Wilkersons are proud to that their approach to customer service, along with the availability of quality products makes Slightly High Maintenance stand out from any competition.
“We were recently named ‘Salon of the Year’ by the Kingman Daily Miner,” said Stephanie proudly. “I feel really proud that our business is seen as professional and caring. The memories we each share with our long-time clients is so important to us – and creating personal relationships with our clients is just an invaluable perk for me and my staff!”
Stephanie says the business struggled a bit during the COVID shutdown, but that Slightly High Maintenance was able to stay open during that trying time. She looks forward to many more years of satisfied clientele.
“Between my three beauty specialists and myself, our first priority is always to help our clients look and feel their very best,” said Stephanie. “We offer a full-service salon to include cuts, up-dos, blowouts, color, perms, highlights, ear piercing, waxing, manicure, pedicure, gels, and acrylics – all for both men and women!”
The boutique side of the business offers a full line of quality makeup, and skin and hair care. Some of the quality brands include AVEDA, Bare Minerals, Farmhouse Fresh Goods, Moroccanoil, 1803 Candles Hempz, and Brazilian Blowout.
The salon recently relocated to a higher traffic, easier to access location at 2425 Hualapai Mountain Rd., Suite B (in the strip mall next to Mission Bank).
“We are so thankful that the move to our new location went so smoothly,” said Stephanie. “This move provides a much larger area for both salon work and our boutique, and is much easier for our clients to access.”
The Wilkerson family is also active in the community and support various nonprofit pet agencies and car clubs. “After beauty, pets are my passion,” said Stephanie. “We support the annual Humane Society dinner as well as other local charities.
