KINGMAN – Some discomfort but no serious injuries were reported during a hazardous materials incident at the Kingman Airport Industrial Park. Emergency service personnel responded to the Zep, Inc. AFCO production facility at 4625 Interstate Way to conduct an “odor investigation” on July 21.
“Upon arrival, the crew immediately began experiencing irritation to their eyes,” said Northern Arizona Fire District (NAFD) Chief Dennis Hoke. “It was determined that a rapid chemical reaction had occurred during a manufacturing process and hazardous off-gassing was releasing from inside the structure.”
Hoke said the new facility is not yet in commercial operation and that the accident occurred during a “test run.” Hoke said a liquid food grade solvent product spilled onto the floor inside the facility.
Hoke credited Zep officials for a textbook response to the emergency. He said they checked all the boxes for protocols, from alerting nearby businesses to reporting the incident to authorities as required.
Hoke said the company secured a private firm to conduct a cleanup.
